This is the first time that Texas rates school districts with a letter grade rating system. The A-F ratings are based largely on the results of the 2018 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and the End-of-Course (EOC) exams.

The previous accountability system gave school districts in Texas one of two ratings: “Met Standard” or “Improvement Required.” The new rating is based upon a three-domain system that encompasses student achievement, school progress, and closing the achievement gaps.

“This is just one metric of the overall Los Fresnos academic experience, and we are extremely proud to see our students excelling on this measure as well,” Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar said. “An 'A' rating validates the dedication of staff members who understand what is at stake and the hard work of students who have a desire to achieve their full potential.”

The A rating is accompanied by what the Texas Education Agency refers to as distinction designations. These were created to spotlight indicators within the accountability system in which the district and district’s campuses excelled.

Although campuses are eligible to receive numerous distinctions, there is only one distinction awarded at the district level and Los Fresnos CISD has been the recipient of that recognition each year since the Texas Education Agency began issuing distinction designations in 2014.

This places Los Fresnos CISD among five districts in Texas to sustain this level of student performance for five consecutive years. The coveted postsecondary readiness distinction considers factors such as graduation rates, ACT/SAT participation and performance, Career and Technical Education graduates and dual-credit course completion rates.

"This distinction means that we are delivering on our mission of providing a quality educational experience that results in the development of socially responsible lifelong learners,” Salazar said. “Commencement ceremonies are much more meaningful as diplomas come with added value. The high school diploma our students receive is symbolic of students meeting the requirements for graduation from high school and now it also serves as evidence that our students well equipped with college, career, and military readiness.”

Los Fresnos CISD has traditionally been among the top-performing districts in the Region One Education Service Center with students consistently exceeding regional and state averages in all areas including reading, mathematics, writing, science and social studies in grades 3 through 8. This level of performance has also been consistently sustained at the high school level where students also have exceeded state and regional averages in End-of-Course exams in English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology I and U.S. History.

All 14 District campuses received a “Met Standard” rating and numerous distinctions including the Post-Secondary Readiness Distinction – a measure that looks at how schools are preparing students with college and career readiness skills.

"It is a privilege to work alongside a staff that works with a laser-like focus and shows up every day committed to continuous improvement,” Salazar said. “There is a synergy created by this level of student performance as it furthers our resolve to continue to create the types of experiences that produce these outcomes.”
