Sydney Jo Peña of Liberty Memorial Middle School won her second straight Los Fresnos CISD Spelling Bee Saturday at Los Fresnos United Cafeteria.

Peña qualifies to participate in the Rio Grande Valley Spelling Bee scheduled March 2 at South Texas College Weslaco.

Peña and Grecia Benavides from Resaca Middle School went 17 rounds before Peña spelled the championship word correctly. Benavides missed on her word on the 16th round, and Peña had spell her 16th round word correctly before receiving the championship word.

Peña was the 2018 champion. As a student at Los Fresnos Elementary School, she placed fourth in 2017 and second in the 2016. 

Benavides won the championship in 2015 and 2017 as a student at Olmito Elementary School. She was the youngest district champion ever in 2015 when she won as a third-grader.

The only other district champion in the last five been was Clarisse Tudon of Los Cuates Middle School, who won the 2016 Bee and advanced to the National Spelling Bee.

Noah Sebastian Gomez, a first-grade student at Lopez-Riggins Elementary, finished in third place. He advanced to the ninth round, four rounds higher than the fourth-place finishers. He finished in fourth place last year.

Five spellers tied for fourth place. They were Matthew Gomez of Lopez-Riggins, Isaiah Cisneros of Rancho Verde Elementary, Benjamin Lu and Joseph Reyna of Villareal Elementary and Joel Pallero of Resaca Middle School. 

The students placed among the top three at their respective campus spelling bees held in December and January.

  • Lopez-Riggins Elementary: Matthew Gomez, Noah Gomez, Paola Solis
  • Los Fresnos Elementary: Ethan Ozuna, Gavin Pace, Sol Isabella Guzman
  • Olmito Elementary: Nayeli Barrera, Marbella Ramirez, Maria Alejandra Juarez Dragustinovis
  • Palmer-Laakso Elementary: Alexa Camarillo, Lucas Hinojosa, Nicolas Sandoval
  • Rancho Verde Elementary: Isabella de Leon, Isaiah Cisneros, Mia Perez
  • Dora Romero Elementary: Demarkus Arellano, Evelyn Quintero, Judith Mire
  • Villareal Elementary: Benjamin Lu, Joseph Reyna, Sebastian Agcanas
  • Liberty Memorial Middle School: Sydney Jo Peña, Alexis Rodriguez, Daniella Villarreal
  • Los Cuates Middle School: Carlos A. Rodriguez, Carlos E. Rodriguez, Juanita Tobar
  • Resaca Middle School: Grecia Benavidez, Joel Pallero, Kaitlyn Hernandez
